Bethanne Bethard Hill was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and raised in Birmingham, the youngest of 6 children. She is a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and holds a BFA in painting and sculpture from Birmingham-Southern College. Bethanne and her husband, artist Darius Hill have three children, Olivia, Esme, and Atticus. Bethanne works from her studio in the carriage house behind their home where she paints and illustrates full time. Illustration projects include numerous cover and interior art for books and CDs.
Bethanne’s work can be found in the Permanent Collections of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Alabama Power, Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Ronald McDonald Charities, Burr Foreman Law Firm’s Florida Office, as well as many private collections.

Artist Statement:

As a young artist, my first great influence was primitive art, specifically Australian Aboriginal art. The bold outlines, patterns and simplified shapes seemed to directly convey the power of the animals depicted. I have always been drawn to rural landscapes. In the South, we enjoy a “gracious plenty”. There are plenty of stories, legends, and moments in lives long gone. Southerners have spun their lives into tall tales and songs that burst with the lushness of life.
