Sam McMillan (1926–2018) was a self-taught Southern folk artist from North Carolina, famous for covering found objects—from beds and birdhouses to clothing—in vibrant, colorful polka dots using bright, primary colors. His trademark motto was, “If we all hold hands, we can’t fight,” promoting peace and unity. McMillan passed away in 2018, but his artwork remains in high demand and is featured in private and public collections nationwide. His former studio in Winston-Salem is currently the subject of local preservation efforts.
