Why Create with Clay?

After serving in Germany in the US Military I attended college in Indiana and in my last semester I had to fulfill a Fine Arts credit to gain my BA degree from Indiana University. I enrolled in a ceramics 101 class and fell in love with the world of clay. I did independent study after that, learning glaze chemistry, pushing my skills on the pottery wheel, and experimenting with different firing techniques. I realized then, clay is my passion.

During this time I met a group of Wood Firing Potters. Motivated by this method of firing pots I helped fire and build kilns for this method of finishing the wares.,I then designed and built my own wood fire kiln and also played with other fuels, like recycled veggie oil and sawdust, to fire the work. 

In the past 28 years I have attended multiple workshops and classes in clay related subjects, from building kilns, mold making, glazing techniques, firing methods and the list goes on. 

Either firing with wood or salt, or using my current electric and gas kilns using porcelain and stoneware clays and slips, I strive to create unique and subtle work. 

The medium of clay keeps my mind and curiosity active, as there is always something to learn from other ceramic artists and in the field of clay. I also teach hand building at the Gallery and wheel throwing classes at my home studio.
